My name is Tom Friedenbach. I am a Bernina technician and sewing/embroidery artist living in Texas. Though I can sew most anything, I specialize in custom, one-of-one, heavily decorated jackets.
I learned to sew first from my mother, who worked as a costumer and local sew-it-all in my home town in South Dakota. As a young, dumb punk, I wanted young, dumb punk fits to wear. My mom wouldn't sew them for me, but she would teach me how to do it myself (she was something of a punk in her own right.)
After college, I moved to China where I spent several years. When I returned to the United States, I continued my sewing journey under the tutelage of TDF/Irene Sharaff Young Master Award winning sewist Travis Halsey (@halseyonstage). I owe an enormous debt to Travis, who not only took my sewing to the next level, but who was also a very dear and special friend. Travis elevated my sewing from okay to gourmet, and I aim to bring his couture level of style and craft into every piece I make.
But though I take the craft of sewing seriously, it is from punk I came and it is to punk I've always been true. I am particularly drawn to music-themed and -inspired pieces and love to collaborate with musicians I admire. I've done special pieces honoring the works of artists like Pink Siifu, AKAI SOLO, Otoboke Beaver, NTS Radio and others.
